Roland Garros: Medvedev’s shock knockout, good news for Jannik Sinner

First excellent elimination at Roland Garros 2023: Daniil Medvedev, triumphant in Rome and world No. 2, was resoundingly defeated in the first round of the Paris Slam tournament by Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, world No. 172.

It was an unthinkable defeat for the Russian tennis player, who had to surrender to the player coming from the qualifiers after a 4-hour 15-minute battle and the scores of 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was the match of a lifetime for Seyboth Wild, who put up 66 winning strokes against an unrecognizable Medvedev compared to the one at the Foro Italico (over 50 free errors).

Medvedev’s defeat is certainly good news for Jannik Sinner, who sees eliminated his black beast (never beaten in his career), whom he could have crossed in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. Now for the Blue the road to the semifinals is more downhill, although there is no shortage of pitfalls, starting with Germany’s Altmaier, whom he will face in the second round.
