Roma, European sting: long stop for Mourinho and maxi fine for club
Uefa imposes 4 rounds of disqualification on Jose Mourinho
Uefa has imposed four days of disqualification on José Mourinho, Roma’s coach, at the conclusion of assessments of what happened on the night of the Europa League final lost on penalties by the Giallorossi to Sevilla last May 31. The disciplinary body of the European confederation then ordered an away trip without accompanying fans in the next away match in Europe, restrictions in the first home match and a series of fines to the club for what happened not only in the final in Budapest, but also in the semifinal first leg against Bayer Leverkusen.
Uefa, in a statement released Wednesday, confirmed that it had decided to “suspend AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho for the next four (4) matches in UEFA club competitions in which he would otherwise have participated, for addressing offensive language to a match official.”
In addition to the disqualification for the Special One, Uefa’s disciplinary body decided to “fine AS Roma 50,000 euros with a ban on selling tickets to its away fans for the next (1) match in Uefa competitions, for lighting fireworks, throwing objects, acts of damage and disturbing the crowd.” The Giallorossi will also have to pay a “fine of 5,000 euros for the team’s misbehavior,” in addition to “contacting the Hungarian Football Association within 30 days for the settlement of damages caused by its fans, namely for the broken bins, paper boxes, glasses and two broken seats.”
Regarding the semifinal match against Bayer, finally, Roma was “fined 30,000 euros with the partial closure of the Stadio Olimpico, which will consist of at least 6,000 seats (3,000 seats in the north stand and 3,000 seats in the west stand), during the next (1) Uefa competitions match, for throwing objects. Roma will also be fined 32,500 euros for lighting fireworks and 18,000 euros for obstructing public passages.”
