NBA Draft: no surprises, Victor Wembanyama to the Spurs
Now it’s official, the French phenom will play in San Antonio
Not that there could have been any surprises, but it was a historic moment nonetheless. As predicted, the phenomenal Victor Wembanyama was selected with the No. 1 call-up to the 2023 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs.
“I really can’t describe it. One of the strongest feelings of my life. Probably the best night of my life. I’ve been dreaming about it for so long. It’s a dream come true. It’s incredible,” his words reported by ESPN. “He understands what the hype is. He understands the great attention he’s getting and he can welcome it, not worry about it. I think he can handle the responsibility,” the comment from Gregg Popovich, his new coach.
Victor Wembanyama is the first player to be selected No. 1 without having played college ball since Andrea Bargnani (2006). His statistics from his last season in France, wearing the Metropolitans 92 jersey, were as follows: average 20.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.0 stoppages per game.
