Luciano Spalletti: “Never talked about a sabbatical year.”

Former Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti on the sidelines of an event in Certaldo shed light on his farewell to the Azzurri and his break: “You invented the sabbatical year and you carry it on yourselves, I said I needed to catch my breath and some things to fix. I need some time, then I’ll see what’s in front of me and evaluate the things I need. I needed to be still and learn from other coaches.”

“But I don’t fit into the concept of a sabbatical, it’s not like you can tell if I’ll be back next year. Needs change, you get attracted to other things. You always need the passion of the game, of the ball. You don’t necessarily go for exceptional things.”

“I need to get excited, I look for the feeling, beyond the level. In Naples they gave me immense joy, although it was great the thing we did, there is no greatness that can deserve the joy they gave me. Impossible to reciprocate the joy they gave me, I will always defend Napoli.”
