Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner’s perfect start with Safiullin
Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner ahead by one set against Safiullin
Perfect start for Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon quarterfinals against Roman Safiullin. The Italian number one won the first set with a score of 6-4 in just over 35 minutes.
After failing the first two break points in the fifth game, the South Tyrolean tennis player managed to snatch the Russian player’s service turn by taking a 5-4 lead. In addition, good service percentages and aggressiveness in response allowed the world number eight to not concede a single break point to his opponent.
The Wimbledon tournament has its roots in history: it is the oldest event as far as tennis is concerned. Spencer Gore was the first winner and one of the inventors of the volley method of play. In the inaugural edition of the tournament, the Englishman defeated compatriot William Marshall in the final in three sets: 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The following year Gore tried to defend his title against Frank Hadow, but had to surrender in three sets: 7-5, 6-1, 9-7.
