In Umag Lorenzo Sonego wins derby with Marco Cecchinato
Lorenzo Sonego is specializing in derbies against his countrymen. After the two on grass with Matteo Berrettini, one won in Stuttgart and one lost in Wimbledon, today on the clay of Umag he beat Marco Cecchinato in another all-Italian match with a score of 6-1 7-6 qualifying for the quarterfinals.
First set literally dominated by the Turinese who breaks the Palermo man three times on serve in the first, third and seventh game, when he closes the partial at the fourth set point. In the second set Sonego makes another break at 2-1 but immediately afterwards loses his service for the first time, even to zero.
The partial dragged on to the tie-break in which Sonego went up 4-1, got his serve back and even overruled when Cecchinato on 6-5 had a chance to lengthen the match to the third set but the world number 96 did not take advantage of it and then it was the Piedmontese who closed the file after an hour and 35 minutes of play on 9-7 at the second match point.
Now in the quarters Lorenzo, who is the No. 2 seed in the Croatian tournament and world No. 43, will face Spain’s Jaume Munar, ranked No. 104, a 6-4 6-3 winner over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, No. 87.
