Women’s Italy, resounding knockout and elimination from the World Cup
South Africa in round of 16, Italy eliminated
A chilling Wednesday morning culminating in the elimination of the Italian national soccer team from the World Cup being held in Oceania.
Against South Africa, Bertolini’s team took the lead in the 11th minute with a penalty kick converted by Caruso. The road seemed paved but before halftime came the equalizer through a fantozzian own goal by Orsi. The Italian reaction was printed on the post hit by Beccari.
In the second half, South Africa even took the lead with a left-footed shot by Magala, then a half-miracle by Durante prevented their opponents from taking a 3-1 lead. Instead came the 2-2 that was worth the qualification, signed by Caruso under the goal after a header by the usual Girelli, who then, however, gobbled up the 3-2 chance. Instead, the South Africans scored again, with Kgatlana. Despite the 15 (!) minutes of recovery time, the result did not change anymore.
In the other match of the group, Sweden beat Argentina 2-0.
