Giorgio Napolitano è died. President Emeritus of the Italian Republic, he was the first in history to be re-elected for a second term in 2013. Already president of the Chamber of Deputies and minister of the Interior, he è passed away at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the Salvator Mundi clinic on the Janiculum Hill in Rome where he was hospitalized. He was 98 years old.

Born in Naples on June 29, 1925, Giorgio Napolitano studied at the classical high school first in his hometown and then in Padua where he graduated. A university student at the Federico II in the Neapolitan capital, here he graduatedò in Law and beganò to become passionate about politics.

He entered Parliament for the first time in 1953 as an MP, remaining an MP almost continuously until 1996 (he skipped only the 4th legislature). In 2006 he became president of the Republic, succeeding Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. He was the head of state who greeted Italy’s victory at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, witnessing the penalty shootout victory over France from the grandstand of honor at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
