Jannik Sinner, Nicola Pietrangeli’s words cause discussion
Nicola Pietrangeli è categorical: "Two lives won’t be enough for him…"
During an interview to the microphones of Adnkronos, former Italian tennis player Nicola Pietrangeli è expressed himself bluntly about the record achieved by Jannik Sinner at the ATP 500 in Beijing. The South Tyrolean with the success against Carlos Alcaraz reached his own best ranking by climbing to fourth place.
"You can't talk about records because I came in at number 3 in the world, when the ATP computer didn't exist yet, but the rankings were already being made. I know records are made to be broken, but to reach me first he will have to get my results" explained the two-time Roland Garros champion.
"I am convinced that he can still improve, but the leap forward; he will do it by winning a Grand Slam and for me he will achieve it soon, maybe already next year. In any case, I hope in a short time to comment on other feats of Sinner, maybe already in November in Malaga in the Davis Cup. If he and the other Azzurri are well physically we can also aim to try to win the Cup" added the 90-year-old former athlete.
In an interview with Repubblica, the Italian tennis legend recoiled: "To overcome even me will not take him two lifetimes… Jannik pushes the whole movement, forò he has Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev in front of him. I hope he will prove me wrong", said Pietrangeli, who in his career è was world number three in 1959 and 1960, but before the Open era.
