United Cup: Alexander Zverev leads Germany to triumph

È Alexander Zverev the absolute star of the United Cup 2024. Indeed, the German tennis player dragged Germany to success against Poland, thanks to a comeback victory in singles against Hubert Hurkacz, and a decisive success in mixed doubles, paired with Laura Siegemund, defeating the duo formed by the same Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek.

The first singles match of the day had seen the clear-cut affirmation of the world number one, Iga Swiatek, who left no chance for Angelique Kerber with a clear 6-3 6-0 after an hour and ten minutes of play. Next è it was the turn of Sascha Zverev, fresh from his marathon semifinal match with Australia late into the night, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz in a comeback 6-7 7-6 6-4 after three hours of play, nullifying no less than two match points for the Pole.

Finally, in the doubles decider, Sascha, paired with Siegemund, completed the comeback, beating the Hurkacz-Swiatek pair on the super tie-break with a score of 6-4 5-7 10-4 after one hour and forty-five minutes of play. Zverev, who remained on the court for a total of 10 hours between the semifinals and the final, è the real leader of Germany’s victory, thus presenting himself in the best possible way to the Melbourne event where the Australian Open will be staged, starting Jan. 15.

Germany thus obtains its first United Cup title, succeeding the United States, which had won 3-0 over Italy in the first edition of the team tournament in Australia.
