Women’s saber, the Azzurre fly to Paris 2024
Olympic pass for blue female saber
The Italian women’s saber team has won qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The pass è arrived at the World Cup weekend in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, in the last round valid for access to the Five Circles competition. The Azzurre, led by head coach Nicola Zanotti, è it was enough to reach the quarterfinals to get the coveted qualification.
Martina Criscio, Michela Battiston, Chiara Mormile and Irene Vecchi beat Greece in the round of 16 with a clear 45-32 final. In the quarters, the Azzurre's race came to a halt in front of Hungary, which prevailed with a score of 45-41 emerging only at the last hits, but the simultaneous success of Ukraine over the United States (who were contending with Italy for the Olympic pass in this stage) allowed Italy to celebrate anyway.
Satisfied Paolo Azzi, president of Federscherma: "Congratulations to the girls and all the staff of our national team,” he told official Federation channels. They never gave up, even when, after the false step in the World Championships in Milan, the qualification seemed to have become very complicated".
"With compactness and character, living the moment as a real team, which does not è consist of only four athletes on the piste but of the entire group, our sabre fencers managed to get back on track with the podium in Lima and the fourth place in Athens, and today here in Belgium they celebrate a suffered but well-deserved goal" concluded the number one of Italian fencing.
