Flavio Cobolli, feat in Madrid: eliminated Nicolas Jarry
A memorable victory, achieved against a level-headed opponent.
Flavio Cobolli advances to the Madrid Masters 1000 after a challenge against Nicolas Jarry, beaten in three sets with a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. A splendid victory for the Italian, number 64 in the ATP rankings, who was able to prevail in less than two and a half hours over an opponent like the Chilean who at world level occupies the number 23 position.
The evening seemed to start in the worst way for Cobolli, who in the very first game ceded serve to his opponent bringing home only one point. He has, however, the merit of clinging to the match, snatching the 2-2 counterbreak and then winning the set thanks to a further break in the eighth game. The next one then smiles on the Tuscan, who nullifies as many as three break points to Jarry and takes home the set after a 14-point game.
Decidedly more complicated was the second set, in which Jarry managed to take a 3-0 lead. It will prove to be already the decisive break, as Cobolli fails to take advantage of three break points in the fifth game and from there he can no longer recover. Definitely better goes in the decisive set, which opens with five very fast games. Decisive then is the break of 4-2, which allows the blue to put the distance that the rival will no longer be able to bridge.
Cobolli now advances to the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters 1000, where he will face Khachanov. Also in the same round is Jannik Sinner, set to take on Kotov. Already eliminated, on the other hand, are Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, Luciano Darderi and Lorenzo Sonego (eliminated by his South Tyrolean compatriot).
