Masters 1000 Madrid, Jannik Sinner makes Italian derby his against Lorenzo Sonego
Jannik Sinner beats Lorenzo Sonego in Italian derby in Madrid
It ends with Jannik Sinner’s success in the Italian derby against Lorenzo Sonego, a match valid for the second round of the Madrid Masters 1000. The South Tyrolean, the tournament's No. 1 seed, closed the file in 70 minutes, with a 6-0, 6-3 win during which he left very little to his friend/adversary.
The first set, in particular, è literally without history: in just 26 minutes Sinner won all the games at his disposal, even those on the Piedmontese’s serve, taking advantage of three of the five break points and leaving the first point to Sonego only at 30-0, during the second game.
In the second set Sonego foiled the immediate 0-2 by nullifying a break point, but the fourth game, lost on his own serve, doomed him: Sinner did not even have to accelerate anymore and it was enough for him to conquer the games on his own serve to achieve success, effectively leaving only three games to the Piedmontese.
Jannik Sinner thus confirms himself as the black beast, as an opponent, for Lorenzo Sonego (moreù times his partner in doubles): in the five direct clashes, four in 2023 in addition to today’s, Sinner has always won, leaving Sonego only one set, won on tie-break in Halle, Germany.
