Roland Garros: Novak Djokovic again postpones overtaking Jannik Sinner
Roland Garros: Novak Djokovic-Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4 6-1 6-2
After Jannik Sinner’s three-set triumph over Richard Gasquet, Novak Djokovic’s response was not long in coming, as he ruled with a peremptory 6-4 6-1 6-2 over Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round of Roland Garros in just over two hours of play.
The match starts immediately uphill for the world number one, who immediately loses serve in the opening game. The Serb, however, manages to immediately set the counter-break and as the games go by he too rises up the ranks, once again snatching the serve from Carballes Baena in the 10th game and winning the first set 6-4.
In the second partial, Djokovic presses again on the accelerator, winning four consecutive games. The Spaniard has a minimal d'rogue reaction, but the 37-year-old from Belgrade skillfully administers the lead and even increases it to a 6-1 final. The third partial developed along the same lines as the second, with the Serbian player quickly leading 4-1 and managing until the final 6-2.
Thanks to this success, Djokovic still postpones overtaking Jannik Sinner in the rankings. Nole, however, to remain world No. 1 è called upon to at least make it to the final and hope that the South Tyrolean is eliminated before the semifinals. Should that not be the case, the Serb would be obliged to win the tournament to be mathematically certain of exiting Roland Garros still at the top of the ATP Ranking.
In the next round, the Belgrade native will face the winner of the match between Lorenzo Sonego and Gael Monfils.
