Borussia Dortmund wastes, Real Madrid triumphs: fifth Champions League for Carlo Ancelotti
In the temple of soccer, Wembley, Real Madrid won the Champions League 2023-2024 by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the final.
In the first half, after a’pitch invasion just after the starting whistle by at least three energetic men and after ten minutes of study, the Germans raged on. On 14’ Fullkrug on the offside line stoops and serves Brandt who sends wide. Immediately afterwards Vinicius responds and concludes with a shot but sends high Real’s only chance of the first half.
On 21’ Adeyemi sprinted past Courtois but went too wide on the left and Carvajal deflected his conclusion into the corner. On 24’ Fullkrug hits the post with Courtois completely out of action. On 29’ the Merengues’ Belgian extreme defender saves on Adeyemi and then Fullkrug misses the goal with the tap in. At 41’ again Courtois saves his own by deflecting a Sabitzer conclusion from outside into a corner.
Real’s first shot on goal came on 49’ with a Kroos free kick that Kobel took away from the’cross of the posts, on the next corner Carvajal’s header put high. On 58’ again Carvajal who on Vinicius’ cross shoots on the volley, deflection by Maatsen and Kobel saves in two times. At 63’ here comes Borussia again: Adeyemi from the left crosses for Fullkrug who hits a header in all too much on Courtois who pushes it away with his fists.
On 74’ Real Madrid’s lead: corner taken by Kroos and Carvajal’s winning header incinerating Kobel. At 77’ he devoured the double by hesitating too much on an assist from the left and had his shot deflected into the corner by Schlotterbeck. The Germans were gone: at 79’ another Kroos free kick, Kobel deflects in a dive for a corner, and he repeated himself shortly afterwards by lifting over the crossbar a left-footed Camavinga shot and then again deflecting a Nacho header.
At’83’ Vinicius closed the file by thunderbolting Kobel on an assist from Bellingham despite having hit the ball badly, or perhaps because of it. Borussia’s last hopes are extinguished on a Fullkrug header goal rightly disallowed for offside. Real Madrid reaches 15 between Champions Cups and Champions League wins, for Carlo Ancelotti, who increases his record as a multiple Champions League winner to five, yet another trophy in an unparalleled career. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, must bid farewell to their dream of repeating their 1997 triumph over the then overwhelming favorite Juventus.
