Ginevra Taddeucci and Giorgio Minisini silver in Belgrade. Bronze for Marcello Guidi
Two silvers and a bronze for Italy
The first part of Thursday’s day of competition at the European Swimming Championships in Belgrade gave Italy two silver medals, that of Ginevra Taddeucci in the 5 km open water and that of Giorgio Minisini in artistic swimming, in the free solo program, and Marcello Guidi’s bronze in the men’s 5 km.
As for the women’s 5 km open water, Ginevra Taddeucci finished behind Germany’s Leonie Beck, who was able to engage the superior gear in the very last phase of the race. Closing the podium was Hungary's Bettina Fabian, who mocked Spain's Maria de Valdes Alvarez right at the photo finish.
Giorgio Minisini, however, failed to replicate the gold he won two years ago in Rome (as had already happened in the free program), finishing behind Ranjuo Tomblin, the first Briton to win a European medal in artistic swimming. The bronze medal, however, went to Frenchman Quentin Rakotomalala.
Guidi, for his part, finished third in the men’s 5 km open water, placing behind David Betlehem of Hungary and Marc-Antoine Olivier of France. So there remains at the moment one gold medal won by Italy in the waters of the Serbian capital: it was won by Gregorio Paltrinieri, finishing first in the men’s 10 km open water, just ahead of Olivier and Betlehem.
