Matteo Berrettini also beats Denis Shapovalov: he’s in the quarters in Stuttgart
Matteo Berrettini to the quarters in Stuttgart
Forty-eight hours after his success against Roman Safiullin in the first round of the ATP tournament in Stuttgart, Matteo Berrettini gave himself another important victory, overcoming the Canadian Denis Shapovalov in two sets in the round of 16 and thus reaching the quarters of the tournament on the grass in the capital of Baden-Württemberg.
After an hour and sixteen minutes of play, the Roman closed the match at 6-4, 6-4, thus giving himself an entry into the top eight of a tournament he has already won twice, the first time in 2019 in the final against Felix Auger-Aliassime and the second in 2022 by defeating Andy Murray in the final act.
From the perspective of the match's progression, Berrettini played cleanly and effectively, never conceding a break to his opponent. A linear trend that rewarded the continuity of play of the Roman, who once again confirms his feeling with Stuttgart.
Those played and won by Berrettini in the last three days are the first two matches after a two-month break, in which the former Top 10 player (now No. 95 ATP) had to deal with yet another physical problem. Berrettini è not the only Italian in the quarters in Stuttgart: also in the draw is Lorenzo Musetti, Dominik Koepfer's executioner in the round of 16. The Italian derby è possible in the semifinals.
