Golf: Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘lucky’ win at US Open
The winner admits: "I was a little bit' lucky".
An incredible, almost surreal ending. The US Open was won by DeChambeau. For the U.S. it was the second major in his career, following his victory at the US Open in 2020. For DeChambeau, a success that came thanks to two capital errors by McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman's second-place finish was tough to swallow. In the last round, on 16 and 18, McIlroy missed two very easy putts that doomed him to a resounding defeat in the final head-to-head match with DeChambeau. So much anger for McIlroy that he did not even speak to the media after the catastrophic finish that kept him from winning the U.S. Open.
"I was a little bit lucky. Rory (McIlroy, ed.) didn't put a couple of putts in the hole that he hardly misses. He'll win more majors, there's no doubt. I have nothing but a lot of respect for the way he plays golf…. Fortunately, today theè went well for me", the words of DeChambeau himself reported by ESPN.
In third place were Finau (68, 69, 72, 67) and Cantlay (65, 71, 70, 70) with a final score of -4. At the bottom of the leaderboard was Molinari at +13, the only Italian to make the cut in this crazy edition of the U.S. Open.
