Europeans, Arianna Errigo gold in women’s foil, Italian hat trick in men’s saber

Two golds, one silver, one bronze: è still Italy-show at the European Fencing Championships in Basel. On the second day of competition on the continental platforms in Switzerland, Olympic flag-bearer Arianna Errigo won the foil title for the third time in her career, 7 years after the last time in Tbilisi 2017.

But è men’s saber did something d'even more historic with a resounding hat trick with Michele Gallo’s triumph in an unprecedented all-Italian final with Luca Curatoli, silver and Gigi Samele bronze.

È thus returned to Italy 19 years after Aldo Montano’s success in Zalaegerszeg 2005 the European individual saber title: it was won by Gallo, a 23-year-old from Salerno of the Carabinieri, on a special day also for silver medalist Curatoli, a Neapolitan of the Fiamme Oro and for the third time on the continental podium, and captain Samele.

Tomorrow on the St. Jacobs Halle platforms the third day of the European Championships Basel 2024 will feature individual competitions in men’s epee and women’s saber. For Italy, the four epeeists on the platform will be Gabriele Cimini, Davide Di Veroli, Andrea Santarelli and Federico Vismara. In women’s saber, however, it will be the turn of Italian women Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Chiara Mormile and Irene Vecchi.
