At the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Austria beat Poland 3-1 in the match valid for the second day of Group D of the Germany 2024 European Championships, in a showdown between two teams that had both lost their first game, against France and the Netherlands respectively.
The Austrians took the lead after nine minutes: a cross from the left by Mwene and a winning header by Trauner that finished off Szczesny. The Poles equalized on the half-hour of the first half thanks to former Milan player Piatek, who put into the net a rebound by the opponent’s defense on Bednarek’s shot.
Towards the end of the first half, Sabitzer has two big chances, the first at 39’ with a rejected right-footed shot, the second at 42, with a shot from distance that ends up just wide. LAustria takes the lead again at 66’: Prass puts in the center, Arnautovic feints and the ball to Baumgartner who with the inside right scores.
On 75 Wimmer has a’chance to close out the match but Szczesny tells him no. At 78’ for’ there’s a penalty kick for Austria for landing Sabitzer by Szczesny, on the penalty spot goes Arnautovic who does not miss.
The Danubians could even expand with Posch at 84’ but Szczesny parries, and at 85’ with Laimer getting around Szczesny on the way out but from a defiladed position missing the target. At 93’ Poland almost reopened the game but Grosicki completely free puts it out.
