Elisabetta Cocciaretto declares forfeit for Wimbledon
No Wimbledon for Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Italy loses a component in the women's singles even before the start of Wimbledon. Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who had been drawn against Romanian Anca Todoni, has decided to declare forfeit for the Championships due to a viral infection. Therefore, only four Italians will be engaged in the third English slam: Jasmine Paolini, Sara Errani, Martina Trevisan and Lucia Bronzetti.
The world number seven will debut with Spain’s Sara Sorrives Tormo and if successful, in the second round, will face either Belgium’s Greet Minnen or Britain’s Heather Watson. The Italian, who is in the last quarter of the draw, could find in a potential quarterfinal match the American number two seed in the tournament Coco Gauff.
Also on the lower part of the scoreboard are Sara Errani, who will debut against Linda Noskova, and Martina Trevisan, who will play against the number 12 seed. The Tuscan player, in addition, could find Jasmine Paolini in a potential eighth final.
At the top one Italian presence that of Lucia Bronzetti. And even for her the draw is not one of the smoothest since she will challenge Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the 30th seed in the tournament.
