Euro 2024, Italy: against Switzerland there is a desire for revenge
Nearly 60 precedents between Italy and Switzerland
The wait for the Euro 2024 round of 16 is now over: it will be Italy and Switzerland, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, who will open the dances in a challenge that has been staged as many as 60 times at the international level, and today’s is the second ever confrontation in a European Championship finals. The very first challenge dates back to May 7, 1911 (2-2 draw in a friendly), while the last one was played on November 12, 2021 (1-1 draw in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers).
Precisely the European qualifying rounds for Qatar 2022 are a bitter memory for Italian fans: the two draws obtained against the Swiss (in addition to the one in November 2021 there'è also the 0-0 two months earlier, on September 5), were decisive for the direct qualification of the Helvetians, capable of pushing the Azzurri towards the maze of the play-offs, not overcome in the spring of 2022.
There's therefore a desire for revenge in the Azzurri environment: in the last eleven direct clashes Italy has never lost, recording five wins and six draws, but the bitterness of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers is still quite fresh and a success in Berlin against the men coached by Murat Yakin could push those memories away for good.
Overall, in the 60 matches played between Italy and Switzerland, there are 29 Azzurri victories, 7 Swiss victories and 24 draws: the last Azzurri victory è in the Euro 2020 group stage, on June 16, 2021, by 3-0; the Swiss, on the other hand, last won on May 1, 1993, winning 1-0 at home in the 1994 World Cup qualifier.
