Euro 2024, Luciano Spalletti fails Italy: ‘Not capable of doing more’
A very hard take after a performance to forget.
Luciano Spalletti flunks his Italy without appeal after its elimination at Euro 2024, which matured in a 2-0 win against Switzerland that is not even enough to frame the difficulties shown by the Azzurri on Saturday afternoon in Berlin. And the coach, even, believes that his team was currently unable to give a better performance than the one seen with the Swiss opponents.
"What made the difference è was the pace,” Spalletti told Rai microphones in the heat of the moment. “Ours was too inferior to theirs already in the first half. We had a different pace, even on an individual level. We were not very incisive, then the goal we conceded at the beginning of the second half definitely cut the legs off Italy'Italia".
Even the rotations wanted by Spalletti did not change Italy's fate, and right here è came the coach's bitterest reflection: "Rhythm and freshness make the difference, always. I changed players because I wanted to make them recover, but maybe at this moment we are not able to do more than that. We probably did not arrive in exceptional condition at these Europeans".
Premature, at least for the moment, to move the discussion to the preparation for the 2026 World Cup. " We will talk about that later. Meanwhile, let’s say that this Italy needs more rhythm, more leg, continuity and spirit of sacrifice. Too many of us have turned out to be not very continuous", Spalletti concluded.
