Euro 2024, Switzerland shuts up a very bad Italy: 2-0, Azzurri eliminated
The'elimination è as stark as it is incontestable.
Italy out of Euro 2024, after a 2-0 loss to Switzerland that alone is not enough to frame the difficulties denounced by Luciano Spalletti’s men, in fact never in the game. Decisive for the Swiss were the goals of Remo Freuler at the end of the first half and Ruben Vargas in the first seconds of the second half. Never came the shock for the Azzurri.
The match opened at a decidedly composed pace, and the only excitement for Italy came when there were fears for Barella’s knee that was left on the ground for a few minutes. A few more headaches come from the sides of Donnarumma, who is engaged by Embolo and Rieder. At 37' then comes Freuler’s advantage, served with too much ease by Vargas with Fagioli who misses the closure and Mancini’s deflection that mocks Donnarumma.
The first half ended with another save by the Azzurri goalkeeper, who deflected Rieder’s free kick onto the post. One might hope for a shake-up for Italy after halftime, but instead as early as 46'Switzerland spins the ball around on the left side without any problems and when Vargas goes for the conclusion he signs the doubling goal. Already on the field was Zaccagni for El Shaarawy, then Retegui, Pellegrini, Cambiaso and Frattesi came in. No benefit for the national team.
Paradoxically, the best conclusion for the Azzurri comes from Schar, who in advance of Barella hits the post of his own goal. Chiesa does not light up, Scamacca gets discouraged, Retegui è confusing. With quarter of an hour left, the latter finds Italy's first real shot on goal: easy for Sommer. Scamacca also manages to hit an underhit post, then nothing more happens. And for the Azzurri this è further bad news in a European Championship participation to forget.
