German Marcel Siem won the 81st Open d’Italia presented by Regione Emilia-Romagna with 274 strokes (69 68 66 71, -10). On the course at the Adriatic Golf Club (par 71) in Cervia, he caught up with Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin (71 70 68 65) with a long putt for birdie on the last hole and then overtook him with a birdie on the first additional hole. In third place with 275 (-9) were the’other German Jannik De Bruyn and Sean Crocker of the United States.
Four Italian golfers finished their tournament in the top ten. The best è was Andrea Pavan, fifth with 276 (64 73 69 70, -8), who received the Emilia-Romagna Region Trophy, and right behind, tenth with 277 (-7), were Matteo Manassero, Gregorio De Leo and Filippo Celli.
Marcel Siem, 43, of Mettman, 533 tournaments, brought his number of titles on the circuit to six. He is’ the second German to win in the’Open after Bernhard Langer, who made the double (1983, 1997), and with whom he won the World Cup in 2006.
It’ was his fourth race after a stop for hip surgery. For the title, he received a check for $552,500 (516,774 euros) out of a prize pool of $3,250,000.
