Vincenzo Santopadre dà advice to Filippo Volandri

Vincenzo Santopadre, former coach of Matteo Berrettini and now alongside Luca Van Assche, gave a lengthy interview to the microphones of Tuttosport in which he also talked about the Davis Cup and the employment of our number one Jannik Sinner.

The Azzurri’s path to the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga will start against captain Guillermo Coria’s Argentina, which can count on Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo in singles, as well as the Andres Molteni/Maximo Gonzalez pair in doubles: "Italy è necessarily the favorite for Davis, no need to hide. Me captain? I would love to".

In a possible decisive doubles Santopadre would line up Sinner: "You have to have plans a priori, but è it is important to understand the moment, the state of form and emotional state of the player. Having the world No. 1 on the team, who doesn’t è specialize in doubles just because he doesn’t play it as much, makes a difference. Sinner has a level, a personality and an ability to handle hot moments that would make me start with him, without taking anything away of course from an extraordinary pair like Andrea and Simone who have had a crazy season. Then if Jannik tells me he doesn’t feel like it è another matter, but if I were the captain a chat with him after the singles I would do it".

According to Ivan Ljubicic the world number one è the undisputed favorite for the ATP Finals: "Ivan è a friend and a great connoisseur, I would never dare to go against him. I see Jannik as a favorite, although maybe not an over favorite. In a semifinal match you can find a Zverev: if he serves as he knows he doesn’t è that Sinner takes it from home. Forò it’s the others who have to hope that Sinner doesn’t play his best, otherwise sì, he è the favorite".

"We were taught that you can always do better and I am an optimist. I hope sì but it must not become a vice, otherwise we never enjoy successes. The probability of doing better is low, although we fans hope so. Being a fan can also lead to exaggeration: if Sinner loses in the semifinals at the Finals, a trial cannot be made; one must maintain balance. Sometimes even insiders tend to get a little lost’. In tennis only one wins and it’s quite incredible that that one this year had a monstrous winning percentage, worthy only of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic" concluded Santopadre.
