Claudio Ranieri divides Cagliari fans
News of Claudio Ranieri’s return to Roma has stirred up some controversy among Cagliari fans, who remember how last year the coach declared that the Rossoblù club would be the last of his career. On social media one can read criticism from some Sardinian supporters, although in a rather moderate tone and still very respectful.
Some comments take on an ironic tinge: "I didn’t know Roma was a national team" writes a Rossoblù fan; "Long live consistency" states one post. Others express disappointment: "Now we only have Gigi Riva left, forever". However, among Ranieri’s supporters at Roma, there’è those who defend him, arguing that the author of the Leicester miracle deserves only gratitude: "Thank you for everything youò have done for Cagliari".
Ranieri has a significant history with Cagliari: having arrived in 1988 when the team was in Serie C, he took it to Serie B and, in just one year, achieved promotion to Serie A. He then achieved salvation in the top flight after a difficult start and, on his return to Cagliari, led the team to promotion to Serie A in the playoff final in Bari thanks to a Pavoletti kick that is destined to remain in history.
Last year, Ranieri again achieved salvation despite a situation that seemed compromised. In the end, he had decided to retire from the clubs to eventually devote himself to a national team, but he could not say no to Roma’s call.
