Aryna Sabalenka triumphs in Madrid, beats Coco Gauff in final

Belarusian world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka won the Madrid WTA 1000 by beating U.S. No. 4 ranked Coco Gauff in the final with a score of 6-3 7-6 in an ira and 40 minutes of play.

Gauff has to save a beak ball already in the first game of the match, then gives up the next two serves.

Sabalenka then vla 4-1 with a double break, immediately returns one but then on 5-3 she makes the third break of the partial set that also wins her the first set on the second ball.

In the second set Coco goes ahead by a break in the third game, on 3-2 she saves two counterbreak balls but when she serves for the set on 5-4 she goes down 0-40, recovers but then misses a set point and on the fifth break ball of the game has to suffer Sabalenka’s comeback. In the tie-break from 3-3 Aryna won four conseutive points that earned her the triumph.

For Sabalenka it is her 20th title on the WTA major circuit, her third of the season, her sixth 1000, her second of the season, and her third on clay, and it just so happens that the other two she also won in Madrid in 2021 and 2023, on a faster surface than the other clay tournaments that suits her characteristics perfectly. Gauff, on the other hand, will return to world No. 3 on Monday, bypassing compatriot Jessica Pegula.
