Good first for Tatiana Pieri in the “Grand Prix Sar la Princesse Lalla Meryem,” a WTA 250 tournament with a prize pool of $275,094 that is being played on clay in Rabat, Morocco.

The 26-year-old from Bagni di Lucca, No. 377 in the rankings, who was promoted from the qualifiers, beat Spain&#8217s Carlota Martinez Cirez, No. 222 WTA, against whom she had lost in her only previous match, in the second round of the ITF Hammamet in 2024, 63 60 in one hour and 26 minutes. This time, however, there was no match and Pieri –who boasts 6 ITF titles in her career – scored her first victory at the WTA main draw level.

In the second round Pieri will have to face Australian Alja Tomljanovic, No. 79 WTA: there is no precedent between the two.

Nothing to do for Lucia Bronzetti, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Camilla Rosatello. Badly for Bronzetti, No. 54 in the rankings and third seeded favorite and winner of the title in 2023, defeated 62 61, in just 62 minutes of play, by Turkish Zeynep Sonmez, No. 76 WTA. The 23-year-old from Istanbul had also won in two sets in her only previous match with the 26-year-old from Villa Verucchio, played in the first round of the WTA 125 on clay in Parma last year.
