Roland Garros: Elisabetta Cocciaretto overwhelms Taylor Townsend

Elisabetta Cocciaretto gets off on the right foot at Roland Garros. The tennis player, number 89 in the world, overcame in two sets the U.S. player Taylor Townsend, number 104 in the WTA ranking, who was repechaged in the draw as a lucky loser.

6-3 6-2 the final score accrued in favor of the Italian after an hour and a quarter of play. In the first set what made the difference was a single break, obtained by Cocciaretto in the eighth game before closing the partial on serve (6-3).

In the second set, the balance is short-lived: the Marche player breaks Townsend’s serve in the fifth game (3-2) and repeats the break advantage in the seventh game before closing on serve (6-2), stringing a series of four consecutive games.

Thanks to this victory, Cocciaretto advances to the second round of the Paris Slam where she will face Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, number 20 in the seeding and WTA rankings, who clearly eliminated Lucia Bronzetti (6-3 6-2).
