He seemed destined to save Italy but, in the end, Claudio Ranieri has said no. Hailed as the’right man to take Luciano Spalletti&#8217s place and perform yet another miracle of his career, the now former Roma coach reportedly politely turned down the proposal of Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC.

“Claudio Ranieri has decided to turn down the bench of the Italian national team” reads the post on X by well-known journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. A choice that surely has to do with the desire, on the part of the same Claudio Ranieri to devote himself completely to the Roma project to which he cares so much and that, probably, prevents him from thinking about anything else.

At this point, the FIGC’s plans will have to, perforce, change and also quickly. As known, among the papabili, c’is also Stefano Pioli who, however, seems very close to his return to Fiorentina, a club he coached from 2017 to 2019. It remains to be seen whether more probes will be made to see who will be entrusted with a bench that, at the moment, is decidedly uncomfortable for everyone.

There are those who also speculate on a foreign solution, although, at the moment, there would be no names of non-Italian coaches in play. The ideal solution was Claudio Ranieri, who, however, preferred to decline the offer, putting everything and everyone back on the line.
