Roma, Wesley target: Gasperini is crazy about him

The new era of Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma tag is about to begin. Among the first names mentioned by the coach is that of Wesley Franca, Flamengo’s 2003-born right back. The Brazilian is considered an ideal profile for the tactical idea of the former Atalanta coach, who has always favored outfielders who are quick, technical and able to cover the entire flank.

Wesley, already a protagonist with Flamengo in the victorious 2021 Copa Libertadores, is a player Gasperini has been following for some time. Back in his Dea days, the coach had already asked to buy the young lateral, a negotiation that later fell through. Today, however, the right moment could come: Roma has concretely entered the race for the Brazilian talent, also appreciated by several European clubs.

The Capitoline club, however, must resolve the managerial rebus left by the recent split with sporting director Florent Ghisolfi before sinking the blow. In contention for the role are Ricky Massara, formerly of Milan, and Federico Balzaretti, already an insider at the club. Once this point is clarified, the Giallorossi will be able to move more decisively in the market.

The right flank is a top priority: Saelemaekers has not been redeemed and Angelino is on his way out, perhaps to Saudi Arabia. Gasperini needs natural outfielders, crucial in his 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. And Wesley represents the perfect profile: great progression, quality dribbling, stamina and pliability. In short, a full-back who is as good as a winger.
