First afternoon with two faces for Italian women’s tennis at Wimbledon: Elisabetta Cocciaretto, in fact, can smile thanks to her success against Katie Volynets, which allows her to advance to the third round of the tournament, while Lucia Bronzetti is forced to surrender to Mirra Andreeva, world number 7, thus saying goodbye to the singles match schedule.

After defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, Cocciaretto thus eliminates another U.S. athlete, the 23-year-old Volynets, earning a place among the best thirty-two players in the tournament. 6-0, 6-4 the score in favor of the tennis player from Marche, who thus equals her best result in the London slam: in fact, she had also reached the third round in 2023.

Nothing to do, on the other hand, for Bronzetti: just back from her two-set success against Jill Teichmann, the Romagna native gave way to Andreeva, who was able to win 6-1, 7-6(4) after an hour and 34 minutes of play. It is not enough the burst of pride of the Italian, who in the second set goes ahead 5-2 and on 5-4 also has two set points: the final is all of the Russian, who goes to take the success at the tie-break.

There therefore remains only Elisabetta Cocciaretto to represent the Tricolor in the women’s tournament, at the singles match level. The 24-year-old is now aiming to match her best result at Grand Slam level, the one she achieved in 2024 at Roland Garros: on the Parisian clay, the Romagnola reached the fourth round, bowing only to Coco Gauff.
