Triathlon, Italy a dream at European Championships: gold medal in mixed relay arrives

Bianca Seregni, Alessio Crociani, Euan De Nigro and Carlotta Missaglia: these were the four representatives of Italy who enabled the blue colors to triumph in the mixed relay at the European Championships being held in Melilla, a Spanish exclave on the northern coast of Morocco. The Azzurri finished ahead of the Netherlands and Hungary.
Sunday’s success capped an extraordinary weekend for Crociani, already individual gold in the men’s race; Seregni, silver in the women’s race; and De Nigro, bronze in the Under 23, as well as Missaglia, the third brilliant fractionalist in today’s race. 1h34’06” the overall time, 4″ better than the Dutch and 7″ faster than the Hungarians.
“We close the long weekend in Melilla with an incredible haul of medals – said with satisfaction Riccardo Giubilei, president of the Italian Triathlon Federation -. Crociani European champion, Seregni European vice-champion and De Nigro Under 23 bronze. The whole Italian team really outstanding. Today’s victory in Mixed Relay duplicates the success in Balikesir last year thus confirming growth of the Italian team and showing that the road taken is the right one”.
“Now – added Giubilei – we must work as a team with the same humility, concertedness and determination. I would like to thank for the work done so far, the self-sacrifice and generosity, the technical director Matteo Torre and, through him, all those who are working hard every day to give the triathlon community those successes that have been awaited for so many years. Triathlon Italy is there”.
