Twelve years ago the tragic death of Doriano Romboni

Twelve years without Doriano Romboni: death on November 30, 2013 while participating in a supermotard race at “Sic Supermoto Day 2013” in Latina, an event created to remember Marco Simoncelli. After a fall, he was struck by another rider who had no way to avoid him. Rushed to the nearest hospital, he did not survive. A pure Italian talent, Romboni also reaped less than he deserved due to a series of unfortunate events and accidents at key moments in his career.
The man from La Spezia won two races in 125, four in 250, and got on the podium in 500 with Aprilia at Assen in 1997. Then he switched to Superbike, again without luck. He would have been 45 years old soon and at the time of the tragedy was working as Sports Director of the Puccetti Racing team.
Those who knew him remember him as a gifted person and rider, courageous, generous, impetuous, capable of achieving much more than he later collected: everyone recognizes that he could have won world titles, even though the world title does not appear in his palmares.
In 1990 came his first world triumph. It was raced at the Nurburgring, in the short version, and it was the fourth round of the season. The Ligurian driver was racing a Honda followed by Massimo Mateoni in the team of Tiziano Del Rio, who had discovered him thanks to manager Roberto Camolei.
