Jannik Sinner like Superman in the face of kryptonite: in keeping with tradition, John McEnroe doesn’t mince words when it comes to having his say on the hottest topics in world tennis, particularly keeping alive the discussion among fans about what happened in the unfortunate Roland Garros second-round match between the Azzurro and Juan Manuel Cerundolo. McEnroe, speaking to ‘La Stampa,’ has no doubts: the mishap is surmountable but a countermeasure must be found as soon as possible.

“It’s like Superman without strength, when he was approaching kryptonite,” explained the former American champion: it’s no fun to play in that state. I was lucky enough not to suffer from cramps when I was active. Now it happens to me a lot, and it’s a terrible feeling, I can assure you.”

“Jannik has very light skin and I know they are doing everything they can to find a solution,” McEnroe added. “However, he was one game away from victory: one more game in his favor and today we would still be talking about him as the favorite for the final victory. Sometimes you lose and it’s not your opponent’s fault: it’s a horrible thing, in any sport.”

For ‘The Genius,’ as McEnroe was nicknamed in the days when he trod the tennis courts, the focus must now shift to Wimbledon: “Sinner can absolutely win it,” he said, reiterating that the unfortunate day in Paris cannot and should not affect the continuation of a season so far of the highest level for Jannik Sinner, who has all the cards to confirm himself as champion at the Championships.
