Virtus: Mumbrù Is Already in Bologna—Working on the Roster

Alex Mumbrù has been chosen by Virtus Bologna to succeed Nenad Jakovljevic. The Spanish coach, who is also the head coach of the German national team, has received the go-ahead from the German federation to hold both positions and has accepted the offer to become the new head coach of the V Nere. During his career, Mumbrù has coached Bilbao and Valencia before taking over as head coach of the German national team in 2024 and winning the European Championship in 2025.
According to reports, Mumbrù beat out the other candidate, Aleksander Sekulic, and has already arrived in Bologna. The official announcement is expected in the coming hours; in the meantime, the new coach is already focusing on how to strengthen the Bianconeri roster ahead of next season. This will be his first-ever experience in Italy.
With the coaching situation settled, Virtus will now focus on building the team: Hackett, Diouf, and Ferrari have been confirmed; Baldasso, Bello, and Casarin are on their way; and the Bologna-based club will be on the hunt for at least two guards and a power forward. There has been talk of Assane Sankare for days, but Napoli reportedly has the edge in the race for the player.
