Lazio Transfer Market: Icardi Closer to a Deal; Lotito Makes a Phone Call
After weeks marked by anticipation, difficulties, and deals that fell through, Lazio finally seems determined to step up its activity in the transfer market to provide Gennaro Gattuso with the reinforcements he needs. After Frattesi, the next target is a center forward. The coach has been waiting for one for some time and had identified Ivanovic as the ideal fit, but the forward chose Lens instead. Now the Biancocelesti are on the hunt for a starter capable of delivering goals, physical presence, and offensive impact.
Among the various names evaluated in recent weeks, Mauro Icardi’s name has also emerged. The Argentine, currently a free agent following the end of his stint at Galatasaray, is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing options available on the market. At the moment, however, it’s fair to say this is primarily a possibility. It’s an idea that Lazio has nevertheless decided to explore by making an initial inquiry.
The club has requested information on the striker’s situation and his potential availability. The response received was noncommittal. There was no “yes,” but neither was there a flat refusal, as was the case with other opportunities evaluated by the former Inter player, including the one involving Olympiakos. Icardi, meanwhile, continues to play for time. His entourage is evaluating various possibilities and has offered the player to numerous clubs. There is interest on the table from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Some leads have lost momentum, while others remain viable. Among these, at least for the moment, is the one leading to Rome.
The main sticking point concerns his salary. The Argentine’s financial demands are, in fact, very high, and for a transfer to Lazio to become a realistic possibility, a significant reduction in his demands would be necessary. This is the obstacle that makes the deal particularly complicated and that, as things stand, leads to Icardi being viewed primarily as a dream to hold onto as the transfer window’s final weeks approach.
Claudio Lotito has also indirectly kept the speculation alive. The Lazio president, responding to a phone call from a fan, confirmed Frattesi’s arrival and, when asked to confirm the Icardi rumors, did not deny the deal. His response—“Give it a rest… shut up”—before hanging up inevitably fueled the rumors. For now, therefore, Icardi remains an idea rather than an actual negotiation. But Lazio has made an inquiry, and the door isn’t completely closed. Much will depend on the player’s willingness to lower his demands and on the club’s ability to turn a possibility into a concrete deal.
