F1: It’s been 60 years since an Italian driver last won at Monza—will Antonelli be next?

Here we go. The 2026 Italian Grand Prix takes place this weekend. It’s one of the most anticipated events on the F1 World Championship calendar—and certainly the one most closely followed by Ferrari fans. The Hamilton-Leclerc duo dreams of bringing great joy to the “Red Tide.”

The Prancing Horse’s last triumph at the “Temple of Speed” came in 2024 with Charles Leclerc’s victory. In short, not that long ago. However, to find the last Italian driver to have won the Italian Grand Prix, you have to go way back in time.

Specifically, to the 1966 race, when Scarfiotti won behind the wheel of a Ferrari. By our calculations, a full 60 years have passed since that marvelous feat. Could it be Antonelli, the current World Championship leader, who breaks this long-standing streak?

It’s possible, but one detail must be taken into account: Antonelli, in agreement with the Mercedes team, has decided to change his engine right here at Monza and, as a result, will be penalized on the grid. The young Italian star will therefore start from the back of the pack and will need to mount a spectacular comeback if he wants to follow in Scarfiotti’s footsteps in the hall of fame of Italian drivers who have won at Monza. Mission impossible? Never say never when someone like Antonelli is in the mix.
