Italian Cup: Sassuolo Advances on Penalties; Next Up Is Juventus

It took some effort, but Sassuolo managed to defeat Frosinone in the round of 32 of the Coppa Italia. Alberto Aquilani’s Neroverdi took the lead in the 36th minute thanks to a goal by Benjamín Domínguez, on loan from Bologna, but Aleksa Terzić equalized in stoppage time of the first half.

In the second half, both coaches attempted to seize the lead by making several substitutions; the Ciociari had several chances and managed to score a second goal through Matteo Cichella, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a previous foul. In the penalty shootout, mistakes by Wisdom Amey and Luis Hasa proved costly, while Sassuolo’s Berardi, Esposito, Thorstvedt, and Bakola were all successful.

In league play, Sassuolo has earned three points in its first two games. They opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Atalanta, but a win against Torino allowed Aquilani’s squad to climb the standings.

Frosinone has also gotten off to a strong start: on the first matchday, Juventus struggled greatly to secure the three points, and in the last round, Massimiliano Alvini’s team scored three goals against Fiorentina.
