2026 World Cycling Championships: Italy Celebrates Its Second Medal Thanks to Nicolas Milesi
Following Filippo Ganna’s second-place finish in Sunday’s elite time trial, Italy is celebrating another silver medal at the Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada: taking the second spot on the podium in the Under-23 time trial was Nicolas Milesi, who, with a time of 37’33″17, finished behind only Ryan Gal, the gold medalist for the Netherlands with a lead of just 7″01.
Rounding out the podium with the bronze medal was Spain’s Hector Alvarez, 11″88 behind the winner. Also in the Top 10 were Ashlin Barry of the United States (+33″78), Mads Landbo (+35″73) and Kristian Egholm (+40″39) of Denmark, Kasper Haugland (+46″58) of Norway, Cypriot Bogdan Zabelinskit (+51.98 seconds), Dutch rider Michiel Mouris (+56.20 seconds), and Irishman Adam Rafferty (+56.89 seconds).
One of the pre-race favorites, Ben Wiggins (son of Bradley, Olympic and world time trial gold medalist and 2012 Tour de France winner), finished just outside the top ten, placing eleventh at 1’07″37. In the race, aside from Milesi, only one other Italian rider, Alessandro Cattani, finished, placing 21st at 1’59″56.
The 2026 World Championships in Montreal will continue throughout the week, featuring the Junior category in addition to the Under-23 and professional categories: the most anticipated races will be on Saturday, the 26th, and Sunday, the 27th, when the Elite Women’s and Elite Men’s categories will take to the streets of Quebec, respectively.
