Italy’s repechage to World Cup, absurd request comes from Belgium

In recent weeks there has been much talk about Italy’s possible repechage to the World Cup. Given the complicated geopolitical situation, according to many, Iran will not take part in the competition and FIFA will therefore have to choose who will take the place of the team coached by Amir Ghalenoei. Italy is the unqualified national team with the best ranking, making it one of the favorites.
Iran is in Group G with Egypt, New Zealand and Belgium, and it is precisely the Red Devils’ fans, alarmed by the possible change in their group, who are stirring up a heated debate and now making an absurd demand. Several Belgian sports media and newspapers are reportedly planning to ask the FIGC to send the Under-21 lineup to the United States as a sign of fair play should Italy take the place of the Iranian national team.
In the meantime, Amir Ghalenoei has summoned an expanded squad of 30 players ahead of the upcoming preparation phase for the rainbow tournament, and the move has given rise to mixed interpretations. For some, it is a clear signal of Iran’s willingness to take part in the tournament; for others, it is just a prudential measure taken in an as-yet-undefined context regarding the country’s official position
Players have already begun gathering at the national team’s retreat in Tehran, but according to sources inside the Iranian sports and media world, reported by Africa Soccer, no final decision has yet been made on participation in the tournament, which will take place between the United States, Canada and Mexico.
