Returning from a lengthy injury that forced him to miss three Grand Slam tournaments, Arthur Fils showed his progress by winning the ATP 500 in Barcelona, which returned him to number one in France. The 21-year-old transalpine tennis player is now aiming to beat his best ranking (14th place) and break into the top 10 for the first time: he has no points to defend in Madrid.

The last few weeks for him have been all about continuity: before the win in Barcelona, he had made the final in Doha, the quarterfinals in Indian Wells, and the semifinals in Miami. The player feels he has made a quantum leap and has also matured through injury.

And he makes no secret of his ambition: to target Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. “They play at a very high level, they always give their best in competition. I always watch them because I want to see what the best are doing to catch up with them. I want to win even when I’m not playing my best game and it’s very important for me to keep improving,” he said through his Youtube channel.

“I’m very positive, very confident. I think it will be great for me, it will be incredible. I’ve been working for a long time to come back and it’s been a very positive season so far.
