Jannik Sinner, the'hidden opportunity that can make a difference

The wrist injury that will force Carlos Alcaraz to miss both the Internazionali d’Italia and Roland Garros also significantly changes the season’s prospects for Jannik Sinner. Indeed, a new horizon opens up for the Italian outfielder: less pressure, more margin, and the chance to manage the transition from clay to grass with a calmness that the calendar rarely grants to top players.

The Murcian’s absence in the next month and a half weighs above all on the sporting level. Alcaraz will not be able to defend the 3,000 points he won a year ago between Rome and Paris, leaving Sinner a highway to consolidate his world record. The champion from Sesto Pusteria, who has never hidden how much the challenges with Carlitos stimulate him, certainly does not rejoice over the stop of his friend-rival, but he is aware that this window may prove decisive in the race for number 1 at the end of the year.

Rome is certainly important, but Roland Garros is inevitably the biggest goal: the Paris tournament is in fact the only one Jannik lacks to complete the Career Grand Slam. Without his top-ranked opponent, Sinner, who has shown superior tactical and mental maturity this year, will be able to approach the Paris campaign with a different kind of pressure: no longer the need to beat his direct rival, but the knowledge that he is the benchmark.

The real advantage, however, may emerge after Paris. In recent years, the transition from clay to grass has been one of the most delicate moments for top players: little time to recover, heavy loads, the need to adapt quickly. Alcaraz’s absence, which often forced Sinner to squeeze every last point, could allow the South Tyrolean to manage his energy more evenly, and then turn up at Wimbledon in ideal condition: fresh, focused, and without the need to chase anyone.

It is clearly not the kind of advantage Sinner likes to emphasize, as his respect for Alcaraz is total, but it is an opportunity a No. 1 must know how to seize. And if 2024 was the year of consecration and 2025 the year of confirmation, 2026 could become the year of absolute dominance partly because of this aspect.
