Opening the 34th day of La Liga will be tonight at 9 p.m. the salvation challenge between Girona and Mallorca, scheduled at the Montilivi. A delicate confrontation between two teams separated by just three points and still fully involved in the fight not to relegate.

Both come to the appointment after a 2-1 defeat in the last round. Girona fell at the Mestalla against Valencia, while Mallorca lost at Mendizorrota to Alavés. Two heavy setbacks, which make the Montilivi’s confrontation even more important in view of salvation.

The standings tell of a subtle balance: Girona is 15th with 38 points, Mallorca 17th at 35. Barely three lengths divide the two teams, with the red zone still very close and a margin of error now reduced to a minimum.

In the Girona household there is the awareness of having squandered another opportunity to almost definitively close the salvation discourse. Michel, after the Valencia knockout, stressed the need to react immediately in front of his own public, asking Montilivi to drag the team in a match that can be worth an important slice of permanence. The coach does not recover elements from the infirmary and should confirm Echeverri at the center of the attack, supported by Tsygankov, Lemar and Ounahi. In the median, Roca, who scored in the last outing, will be pawing the ground.

Similar situation for Mallorca, which paid for a too fragile start to the second half in Alavés, once again coming out without points from a heavy away trip. Demichelis’ team remains in the middle of the salvation tussle and knows it can’t put it off any longer. The Argentine coach will rely on his most experienced men, with Muriqi the offensive reference and Torre at his back along with Virgili.

The stakes are very high. Michel and Demichelis are playing for an important slice of their own season finale in a challenge that promises tension, intensity and little room for error.

Probable formations

Girona (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Martinez, Reis, Blind, Roca; Martin, Witsel; Tsygankov, Lemar, Ounahi; Echeverri. Coach: Michel.
