Juan Manuel Cerundolo has spoken again about his incredible victory over Jannik Sinner in the second round of Roland Garros. The match was the biggest upset of the Paris tournament: with just one game left to win, the world number one felt ill on the court and was sensationally overturned by the Argentine, who, weeks after the event, doesn’t seem all that proud of his achievement.

“I’m really happy with what I did; obviously, I’m very satisfied. I stayed mentally focused throughout the match, but I don’t feel comfortable saying I beat him,” Cerundolo admitted to the Argentine media.

“When it came time to close it out, I wasn’t nervous. He got cramps, which can happen to anyone. It’s happened to me a thousand times, and it’s happened to so many players. I took advantage of it, I won, and I’m very happy about it. He remains the world number one, but I don’t want to say I beat him,” are the words reported by Adnkronos. After his victory over Sinner, Cerundolo lost in three sets to another Italian, Matteo Berrettini.

To clarify the causes of his illness, Sinner underwent a comprehensive series of cardiac and metabolic tests at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. The tests reportedly revealed no significant physical issues: what happened in Paris is believed to be attributable to a general state of fatigue, which developed after more than two months of intense competitive activity with few opportunities for recovery, exacerbated by the extreme weather conditions recorded in the French capital during the tournament. It should be noted that in the first half of 2026, Sinner had won five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments, a tour de force that had inevitably taken a toll on his energy.

With his medical checkups and a brief vacation in Sardinia with his girlfriend Laila Hasanovic now behind him, Sinner has returned to training in Monte Carlo ahead of Wimbledon, where he aims to defend the title he won last season. The champion from Sesto Pusteria will also participate in the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, the prestigious exhibition tournament on the grass courts of London’s Hurlingham Club, a traditional warm-up event for the British Grand Slam. A valuable opportunity to regain confidence on the grass courts ahead of the Championships, scheduled to begin on June 29.
