For those who follow European basketball, Mike James is never just just another player. In Milan, he’s well remembered not only for his great talent with the ball but also for his exuberant personality, which has often put him in the spotlight—though not always in a positive light: It’s no surprise, then, that it’s precisely this 1990-born player—fresh off a long stint with Monaco—who is capturing everyone’s attention, due to what’s happening with what was supposed to be his new club, Barcelona.

In recent weeks, James had reached a full agreement with Barça on a two-year contract: A return to Spain (he had already played in Vitoria between 2014 and 2016) that seemed all but certain, with the American point guard ready to join a coaching project built, at least initially, around the vision of Xavi Pascual, his former coach during his time at Panathinaikos. James had welcomed the offer with enthusiasm, but then something went wrong.

According to reports in ‘El Mundo Deportivo’, Pascual’s decision to leave at the end of the season—terminating his contract with the club early—changed everything. Without the coach who had pushed for his arrival, the Catalan club reassessed its priorities and informed James that he was no longer part of the new plan. This unexpected news came after the deal had already been finalized.

The Catalan newspaper reported the player’s reaction, describing it as immediate—marked by surprise and disappointment—and causing quite a stir in Barcelona: The parties will have to sit back down at the table to find a solution, but this about-face inevitably risks leaving lingering repercussions, even far beyond the boundaries of the playing field.
