Wimbledon: Flavio Cobolli Writes the Next Chapter in Arthur Fery’s Fairy Tale; Jannik Sinner Remains the Only Italian Still in the Tournament

Flavio Cobolli’s run comes to an end, for the second consecutive year, in the quarterfinals. However, while in 2025 it was Novak Djokovic who ended the Roman’s run, this time it was local favorite Arthur Fery—a surprise wild card currently ranked No. 114 in the ATP rankings—who prevented the Italian from advancing to the semifinals. Jannik Sinner, therefore, remains the only Italian still in contention in the men’s draw.

The match, in fact, remained in the balance for two sets before Fery pulled away in the end—no longer considered a mere “underdog”: 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0. After two hours and a quarter on court, this result earned a spot among the top four in the London tournament for a player who had made a name for himself on the lower-tier circuit in recent years but had yet to achieve significant results among the top players.

Cobolli’s only real missed opportunity came at the start of the second set: after breaking his opponent’s serve, the Roman let his lead slip away and was unable to regain control of the match from that point on, even conceding all the games to his opponent, who was spurred on by the home crowd now hoping for a repeat of what happened in 2001, when Goran Ivanisevic won Wimbledon as a wild card—the first player ever to do so at a Grand Slam event.

The last Briton to win the Championships (considering only the men’s singles) was Andy Murray in 2016. Fery still faces a major hurdle, however, before reaching the final: the French-born player, who grew up right here in Wimbledon, will now face Alexander Zverev, who defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in his quarterfinal match.
