CT Italia: Andrea Pirlo Is Now the Alternative to the Guardiola Dream

Andrea Pirlo is also among the names being considered to become the next head coach of the national team. Paolo Maldini and Leonardo are reportedly considering the former midfielder for Italy, Milan, and Juventus as a possible leader of the Azzurri on their journey to the European Championship and, with the stated goal, the 2030 World Cup.
The 2006 World Cup champion would be the top alternative should the effort—considered particularly challenging—to convince Pep Guardiola to accept the position prove unsuccessful. Pirlo’s relationship with the two executives dates back several years. In 2023, Maldini reportedly wanted to appoint him as Milan’s head coach, while Leonardo, back during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, had considered him as a potential major signing before his transfer to Juventus.
Today, Pirlo, 47, coaches in Dubai, following stints with Fatih Karagümrük and Sampdoria. His most prestigious role remains his time at Juventus, where he won a Coppa Italia and an Italian Super Cup. One factor working in his favor is his strong relationship with the FIGC’s technical director and with Brazilian advisor Leonardo—a connection that could ensure full alignment with the Federation’s new leadership structure.
However, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte—considered the candidates with the most international experience—remain in the running, along with Carlo Ancelotti and Stefano Pioli. The final decision is expected by the end of the week and must be presented to CONI President Giovanni Malagò. Subsequently, the FIGC will be able to officially announce the new head coach and kick off a new era for the Italian national team.
