Jannik Sinner: Coach Darren Cahill’s future is once again in question

Darren Cahill’s future continues to be one of the most closely watched topics within Jannik Sinner’s team. After a season that saw the world No. 1 win his second consecutive Wimbledon title, claim his fifth career Grand Slam title, and solidify his position at the top of the ATP rankings, it remains to be seen whether the Australian coach will continue his journey alongside the Italian player into 2027. The team supporting Sinner seems to have achieved an almost perfect balance. The chemistry among coaches, trainers, and physical therapists is one of the South Tyrolean champion’s greatest strengths; he can count on a close-knit staff in which every member plays a well-defined role. It is precisely this atmosphere of mutual trust that has contributed to the successes of recent years.
At the end of 2024, it seemed that Cahill’s tenure was set to end after the following season. Sinner himself had announced that 2025 would be the Australian coach’s final year with the team, only to later convince him to stay on. After last year’s Wimbledon triumph, the world No. 1 had also jokingly revealed that he’d made a sort of “bet” with his coach to try to keep him on a bit longer.
Now the situation has arisen again. Cahill’s contract is set to expire again this year, and the final decision will not be made until the end of the season. Even before the Italian Open, the Australian had explained that he wanted to stay focused on his work before addressing the issue of his future. After his success at the Championships, he reiterated the same point, denying any new “bet.” “Last year I changed my mind; this time we’ll see,” Cahill said, postponing any decision until after the ATP Finals in Turin, an event for which Sinner has already mathematically qualified.
The feeling, however, is that what has happened in recent months may push all parties to continue working together. Sinner’s illness during the French Open further strengthened the bond within the coaching staff. Since then, an intense period of work has allowed the Italian to be at his best at Wimbledon, where he secured another triumph. This journey may have reinforced the conviction to continue a coaching project that keeps delivering extraordinary results.
